Compostable, Recyclable or Biodegradable: What Food Brands Should Spec in 2026

The words biodegradable, compostable and recyclable are used interchangeably, but they describe very different end-of-life outcomes — and misusing them on packaging can create a compliance problem as well as a marketing one.

The three terms, defined

• Biodegradable: the material breaks down naturally, but with no fixed time or conditions — a weak claim on its own
• Compostable: the material breaks down in a specific timeframe under industrial or home composting, backed by a standard such as EN 13432 or BPI
• Recyclable: the material can be recovered into new product where collection and processing infrastructure exists

What to spec

Choose the claim your material can actually certify. For food packaging, industrial-compostable standards (EN 13432 in Europe, BPI in North America) carry the most weight because they impose measurable disintegration and ecotoxicity requirements. Always confirm the certification applies to the finished article, not just the raw resin.

Avoid the pitfalls

Do not claim compostable for a PLA-lined cup if your buyer's region has no industrial composting facility. And check whether additives used to accelerate breakdown genuinely meet a standard, rather than a marketing claim.
